Dr. Sarah MacCarthy’s work focuses on how people – regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender and/or sexual orientation - can get the medicines that are already available, but remain inaccessible, both globally and locally. Through research and quantitative data analysis, she influences how policies and programs can better address dramatic and pervasive health disparities. She also works with qualitative data to make sure there is a face and story behind every number.
Sarah is the inaugural holder of the Magic City LGBTQ Health Studies Endowed Professorship at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). She has more than 10 years of experience in applying systematic mixed-methods research to address the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ adults. Prior to UAB, Sarah worked as a Policy Researcher for the think tank, RAND, focusing on the health of vulnerable populations with special attention to LGBTQ communities.
Sarah received her master’s and doctorate from the Harvard School of Public Health, and completed her postdoctoral research at Brown University.
